Biomedicine

Turkey Tail has the most clinical trials of any mushroom out there. With billions annually spent on research into this mushroom, its extracts are used extensively in mainstream medicine in Japan and China. Here is a synthesis of some key findings:

Anti-inflammatory - Gut health

Human clinical trials show that Turkey Tail extracts have a pre-biotic action, helping support shifts in the gut microbiota and improve digestive tolerance, protecting and balancing the gastrointestinal tract. Trials have also shown extracts to reduce inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines to help maintain gut lining integrity.

Immunity

In Japan, a polysaccharide called PSK from Turkey Tail is an approved adjunctive therapy for certain cancer treatments and is prescribed by the national health system. Clinical trials show an improved survival rate, reduced recurrence rate and overall enhancing or normalising of immune cell function during cancer treatments.

History and Folk Medicine

Turkey Tail is a beautiful bracket mushrooms that grows with concentric rings of dazzling banded colours mimicked in its latin name Trametes versicolor, literally meaning ‘many-coloured thin one’. It has a remarkable ability to digest hardwoods, and is often one of the first fungi to the scene of decay. Its chinese name “Yún Zhī” (云芝) calls to its billowing growth pattern like fluffy cumulus clouds (literally cloud fungus), and for this reason is believed to be a bridge to a celestial and uplifting realm.

Its use in Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on its respiratory support and ability to clear respiratory infections as well as tonifying spleen and lung qi, draining dampness and reducing toxins.

Our Extraction Process

Our mushrooms are triple extracted using alcohol, hot water and pressure (very high temperatures). But first is the harvest! We harvest our mushrooms by hand on our farm with care and attention paid to every mushroom we pick (this is one of our favorite tasks on the farm). The next step is to dehydrate and powder the mushrooms for extraction in high proof organic ethanol. This is a process that takes 4 weeks, with the mixture shaken every day. We then do a final pass of this solution through a heated mixer for 4-6 hours. Next we harvest more mushrooms to use fresh in our water extracts. The first is a long extract at lower temperatures that are specific to each species of mushroom and their unique profiles, and the next (using separate mushrooms again) is a high pressure extract in an autoclave. Finally, we filter and evaporate all of these solutions to concentrate to our final 1:4 super-strength ratio (its a lot of evaporation!).

All of this is to pull out as much of those wonderfully helpful compounds (both alcohol and water soluble) from the mushrooms as possible and to give you the best mushroom tincture we can - a product we are proud to stand behind!
